Abstract

This paper describes the prediction of deep-bed clove drying. This model also considers mass and heat profile that was affected by fermentation process. This model used the equation of two-dimensional finite difference approximation. The dynamic of two-dimensional equation were solved numerically by alternating direction Crank-Nicolson method and then applied to simulate the changes of moisture content and temperature of cloves during drying process. The capabilities of these models were compared with experimental data obtained from the research under variable conditions such as temperature and relative humidity on fermentation and non-fermentation treatment of cloves. The result of simulation showed that the equilibrium of moisture content (EMC) wasconsiderably decreased whereas the rate of drying was dramatically increased with the increase of the temperature of drying. The profile of moisture content on deep-bed cloves drying was unique. The fermented and non-fermented treatments of the cloves did not give significant differences on the drying time in order to achieve the equilibrium of moisture content.

Abstract

Abstract

Optimum growth of tropical mushrooms depend on the ambient environment. In general, mushrooms prefer low air temperature and high air humidity. The growers use closed rooms to maintain favorable conditions. Recently, use of refrigerator is of interest to maintain the favourable conditions under hot and humid climate conditions. This study is attempting to apply control mechanism in maintaining theambient temperature favorable for mushroom growth. A simple heat transfer equation was used to describe changes of temperature inside the growth chamber. This equation was then coupled with a fuzzy logic control to actuate a refrigerator at a suitable length of time. Three temperature condition (16, 19 and 21 O C ) were set as set points. The results show the developed technique was capable to maintain the temperature inside the growth room even though under the influence of a highly fluctuating ambient temperature. This technique was alsoresponsive and reliable in facing immediate disturbances, and showed a realistic requirement of cooling energy.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to modiv the tank model by using infiltration process in the model, based on available daily rainfall data, actual evapotranspiration rates, in 1996 and 1997 for the Cidanau Watershed. The hydrological data were the primary and secondary data. In this study, the prediction of the daily river runoff / discharge was developed by using the modified tank model of the rainfall-runoff processes, and applied to simulate the three land use types in the Cidanau Watershed, comprising of 22 620 Ha. The average coefficient of correlation is 0.81 for the model calibration and validation. The model can also be used to predict river discharge for different land use.

Abstract

This paper describes potentials as well as obstacles in developing wetland for agricultures. Historical backgrounds of wetland utilization for agricultures Indonesia and wetland definition by Ramsar Convention are highlighted. Special emphasis is given to explain physical and hydrological conditions of wetland and opportirnities to develop sustainable agricultural activities based on wetland categories. Current problems in developing wetland, sucsh as land degradation and lost of wetland are enlightened, and a little note is aroused to elucidate the failure of One Million Hectares Project in Central Kalimantan. Finally, prospectivetechnologies for controlling water table were proposed.

Abstract

Mangosteen fruit is one of tropical exotic fruits that has potency as exported commodity but its potency is limited by its poor quality. Both the fruit shell and its aril are very susceptible to any improver handling during and after harvesting andsince then its quality decreases rapidly. Experiments were set up to study the effect of impact, by dropping the fruit from certain heights, and fruit harvesting indexes on its quality. Visual observations showed that dropping the fruit from 0.5 m above the floor was sufficient to damage fruit shell and aril. The inner surface of fruit shell that subjected to the impact became brown and the aril became translucent and tasteless. Quantitatively, fruit shell became hard after two-day- storage and the dropping of the fruit and fruit harvesting indexes significantly affected total soluble solid of the aril. The fruit with harvesting index 5 significantly contained the less total soluble solid when it was dropped from the height of 1 m and stored for 6 days.

Abstract

The concept of equilibrium moisture content or EMC is important in study of storage. The EMC of cereal grain is defined as the moisture content' of the material after it has been exposed to a particular environment for an infinitely longperiod of time. The EMC is dependent upon the humidity and temperature conditions of the environment. The more important limitation in process design for agricultural products is the lack of exprimental data can be found. The variety of products and the differences in measurement method make limitation on the valueof the available data, especially for Indonesian's products. The data are needed to get information about moisture content change when product was processed like storage or drying. The objective of this research is to determine the EMC equation models of local corn with the static method. The result indicates that Chung-Pfost and polynomial models are better reprentative to predict the EMC than Henderson's.
